Fraternities Lobby for Tax Break

Below is an article that discusses the proposed tax legislation relating to contributions to fraternity housing, and some of the lobbying efforts currently going on to support this legislation. Mentioned in this article are Brother Brad Wenstrup, and the University of Cincinnati's current IFC President.

The proposed legislation is gaining steam in Congress, and is an encouraging sign for the future of Greek life.  Please take a few minutes to read about the impact Greek life is having in Washington D.C.

President Santa Ono Visits Ohio Epsilon

Brothers,

This past Tuesday, newly appointed President of the University of Cincinnati, Santa Ono, had dinner and spoke with the brothers of Ohio Epsilon at the James Gamble Nippert Memorial Lodge..  During his visit, President Ono was given a tour of the house, and marveled at the history of our chapter.

Once everyone sat down to dinner, President Ono began his speech on the how he came to be President, how Greek life has impacted his life, and the state of UC and the ongoing conference turmoil.

President Ono did not get involved in Greek life during his undergraduate career at the University of Chicago; a decision he said he always regretted.  Fortunately for him, he got another chance.  He was extended a bid by the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity to become an Honor Initiate while working at Emory University, which he eagerly accepted.  He experienced pledgeship and was initiated into the fraternity.  He praised the character traits that Greek Life builds, referencing the True Gentleman as a pinnacle example.

With regards to the Big East and the future of the University of Cincinnati, President Ono was confident that he could navigate the turmoil and that UC would continue to have the opportunity to play for national championships.

It was an honor to have President Santa Ono to the Ohio Epsilon house.  The undergraduates enjoyed his speech, and took advantage of the opportunity to speak with the leader of our University.

Ohio Epsilon continues to be one of the top chapters in the Sigma Alpha Epsilon realm, and we are always striving to reach new heights.

The Passing of Louise Dieterle Nippert

The Brothers of the Ohio Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon mourn the passing of Louise Dieterle Nippert, wife of our late brother Louis Nippert. Her generosity, spirit, and love for the City of Cincinnati place her among the most special and beloved people in our city's history. Although she is no longer with us, Mrs. Nippert's positive influence on our community will live on.

An Interview with Todd DeGarmo

I would like to start out by thanking Brother Todd DeGarmo for lending his creative talents to the expansion and renovation of the James Gamble Nippert Memorial Lodge.  For those of you who do not know, we will be renovating the lodge within the next year.  Todd has spearheaded the design of the lodge, and we are all excited to see the result.

James C. Kennedy Receives University of Cincinnati College of Law2012 College of Law Distinguished Alumni Award

We are proud to congratulate James Kennedy on being honored as one of the University of Cincinnati's College of Law 2012 Distinguished Alumni.  Below is a brief synopsis of his accomplishments in the Greater Cincinnati Area.

James C. KennedyJim Kennedy practices in the Business Representation and Transactions Practice Group. The focus of his practice is corporate, securities, and financing law, where he has extensive experience in mergers, acquisitions and divestitures representing public corporations, their subsidiaries, and other entities. In his more than 34 years as an attorney for American Financial Group, Inc, its subsidiaries, and affiliates ("AFG"), he has overseen many acquisition and divestiture transactions in recent years with an aggregate transaction value in the billions of dollars. He has significant experience in initial and follow-on public offerings of securities and in representing issuers and investors in private placements of securities. He regularly advised AFG on corporate governance, financing, compliance and litigation matters.

After the passage of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, he consolidated and managed the AFG Internal Audit and Investigative Services department. Jim has performed professional legal services for clients such as American Financial Group, Chiquita Brands International, Inc., Great American Financial Resources, Inc., National Interstate Corporation, Spelling Entertainment Group, Inc., The Charter Company, and American Financial Enterprises, Inc. Jim served AFG in various capacities and retired as Vice President, Deputy General Counsel and Secretary. As Secretary of AFG for more than 25 years, he served as the primary interface with AFG's independent board members and their committees.

70's Reunion Save the Date - All are Welcome

On September 24th, the university is hosting an on-campus reunion for 70's alumni.  The goal is to have 10,000 graduates return to campus.

 

The Greater Cincinnati SAE Alumni Association is working with a group of alumni to host a pre-party for the reunion attendees.  However, the party will be open to ALL SAE ALUMNI.  The non-70's alumni can keep the party going as we don't want the 70's grads to not have a great post-event party to return to.  Please mark your calendars as you won't want to miss one of the best parties of the year.

GCAA Founder's Day Celebration - March 4, 2011

The GCAA of SAE Founder's Day Celebration will be on Friday March 4, 2011 at 6pm in the James Gamble Nippert Memorial Lodge. 

Program details will be coming out soon, but the tenative schedule is as follows:

6:45PM Program/Meal

This year we will be honoring brother Richard Hopple, as we will be unveiling his portrait in the lodge next the other E.S.A.'s from Ohio Epsilon.  It will be a special night! Cost is $50 payable at the door or via mail to the address below.  Checks can be made payable to "GCAA of SAE". 

The $50 covers the following: $20 for annual dues, $15 for your meal, and $15 for an active's meal.

Brothers in the Open

Homecoming 2010 Update

Friday
I spoke with Mecklenburg Gardens, and we have the upstairs area. If you are not familiar with this area, you walk into the bar, turn right and the staircase is back on your right. We will have a couple of waitresses/waiters serving just our group.


Saturday
The game is a noon kickoff, and the parade is at 9am. We will have the bar and food set up in the front yard at 7:30 am.


Sunday
All events are on as scheduled. Doors open at 10:30 AM, and a program will start at 11:30 AM recognizing the journey the property at 2707 Clifton Ave has taken, and the efforts put forth to get it to where it is today. The program should conclude by 12:30P. Drinks and Light hor d'oeuvres will be provided.


PARKING
The best bet for parking this weekend is the Stratford Heights Garage just south of the house, with access points on both Clifton Ave and Stratford. Should that garage be full, look to the Deaconess Hospital garage on Stratford.

Welcome!

Welcome to the new home of the Greater Cincinnati Alumni Association of SAE.  We have had some ups and downs with technology over the last 12 months, and in an effort to put that all behind us, we have set up a new and hopefully PERMANENT home for the GCAA of SAE.  This site will be a means for you to read articles, messages from brothers, and about upcoming events.

This year the calendar has our traditional events planned: A fall picnic on September 22, homecoming on October 30^th and Founder’s Day on March 4^th. 

Along those same lines, we are working with Ohio Epsilon on the 100^th anniversary celebration of the Devotie Hall Association and the opening of the new renovations and expansion of the James Gamble Nippert Memorial lodge. 

We have had a great past 12 months, and I promise you that with your help and continued support that we will have a great future 12 months.

SUDBRACK Chester C., Jr. Beloved husband of Kay (nee Koerner), loving father of Stephanie Busam (John), Karen Sudbrack-Troja, Chip Sudbrack (Karrie), Suzanne Kite (Bill), dear grandfather of Megan and Morgan Busam, Jay, Kassie and Wes Troja, Chad and Mac Sudbrack, Taylor and Willy Kite, preceeded in death by a sister Evelyn Sudbrack Uber, also survived by 2 nieces and 1 nephew. Ches attended Withrow H.S., Northwestern University and received his business degree from the University of Cincinnati. He entered the commercial real estate business in 1953. He had a distinguished career. He served as President of the Cincinnati Board of Realtors in 1966. He was selected as Realtor of The Year in 1966 and again in 1971. He became President of The Ohio Association of Realtors in 1971. He served as a trustee for OAR & NAR. He was a director of The National Association of Realtors. He served locally as a member of the Realtor Political Action Committee for 40 years. He was an appointee by the governor as a commissioner on the Ohio Real Estate Commission for 15 years. He received the Distinguished Service Award from The National Association of Realtors in 1988. He worked tirelessly serving the real estate community on numerous committee on a local, state and national level. He was instrumental in establishing the Real Estate Department at the University of Cincinnnati. He was Chairman of the Board of the American Heart Association SWOH Chapter. He also served on the Board of Directors of Cincinnati Metropolitan Housing Authority and as a trustee of the Action Housing Committee, a member of the Cincinnati Citizens Police Association, a Shriner . Most recently he was an appraiser in Hamilton County for Sherriff Simon Leis. A devoted Brother of the Ohio Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. His family would like to thank all those who were instrumental in his care the last few months. August 6, 2010. Age 79. Friends may call at the Thomas-Justin Memorial 7500 Montgomery Rd.
